Welcome to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology is one of fifteen departments at the Institute of Clinical Sciences at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

It is one of the leading academic otorhinolaryngology departments in Sweden and located at the second largest hospital i.e. the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg. The main objectives are excellent clinical research within the area of Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, nose and throat diseases-ENT) and undergraduate education at the Programme in Medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

The main focus areas of the research at the department are:

  • Bone anchored hearing aids and osseointegration within ENT
  • Inflammatory disease of the esophagus
  • Inflammatory disease of the upper airway
  • Nasal polyposis
  • Sleep disordered breathing in children and adults
  • National quality register research
  • Health related quality of life in head & neck cancer
  • Nutrition in head & neck cancer
  • Markers in head & neck cancer

The research involves several hospitals such as Sahlgrenska University Hospital Gothenburg, Norra Älvsborgs Hospital Trollhättan and Kärnssjukhuset Skövde
The department annually educates 200 medical students in ear-nose and throat diseases.
The department is involved in education of specialists within ENT, so called ST with 2 specific ST-courses in “The difficult airway” and “Basic surgical techniq ues”

In 2012 the international symposium “Anders Tjellström Symposium” on Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA) and osseointegration was held by the department gathering experts from USA, UK, Holland, Brazil and the Scandinavian countries. Read more and see photos from this symposium

The department will be co-hosting the Congress of The Nordic Association of Otolaryngology in 2017 and is expecting around 600 delegates.
